Your local village is Aberlour, a 5 minute drive from Craighead. Here you will find all you need for day to day living although you may prefer to drive to the larger town of Elgin (about 30 minutes away) for superstores, clothes shops etc. However, there is a Co-op, butchers, bakers, delicatessen, gift shop and 2 pubs in Aberlour itself as well as the local brewery of Aberlour Whisky which holds daily tours in the summer months.
Aberlour is set on the banks of the river Spey and the riverside walks are truly lovely, you'll even see the salmon jumping out of the water if you look hard enough!
For the keen walker there are many local walks ranging from a mile upwards, details of these can be found in the Spey information centre which is on the river front.
For the more adventurous there are many activities to choose from, ranging from skiing/snowboarding at the Lecht (about 20 minutes drive) or Aviemore (around 40 minutes) right through to clay pigeon shooting or dog sled rides in the Cairngorms. In the summer months the Lecht offers quad biking, fun karts and chair lift rides.
At the Glenlivet estate mountain bikers can enjoy a network of cross country cycle trails. You can also reach the Moray coast in under an hour and walk along the unspoilt beaches where you may see seals and dolphins.
For the more sedentary amongst you there are numerous opportunities for fishing or golf and of course, the famous Whisky Trail with 3 distilleries including the legendary Glenfiddich distillery close by. There are also many historical buildings such as Ballindalloch Castle, one of the most beautiful and renowned castles in Scotland with extensive gardens and grounds.
The Highlands of Scotland are the perfect place to escape on holiday, the people are friendly and welcoming and the lack of commercial tourist resorts makes this beautiful area a haven of peace and quiet.
